Hotels Kirkwall

Ayre Hotel

Ayre Rd, Kirkwall KW15 1QX, UK – 01856 873001

Perfectly spacious rooms, well appointed with a very large bed! Bathroom was a little dated but perfectly functional. Location is great with lovely views but still round the corner from the town centre. Great dinner on the first night, breakfast was fine for a buffet. Like everyone in Orkney the staff are lovely and I'd happily come back.

Very friendly comfortable hotel the staff are very helpful. You can order a early breakfast if you need to catch a inter island ferry. Good size car park and good location for Kirkwall.

Albert Hotel

7 Mounthoolie Pl, Kirkwall KW15 1JZ, UK – 01856 876000

Excellent hotel lovely room and friendly staff wish I could have stayed longer

Exceeded expectations. Great central location in Kirkwall, although the entrance was a bit difficult to locate on my initial visit. Room was very modern, clean, and comfortable. Cooked breakfast in the morning included. Attached to the Bothy Bar for dinner and late night drinks. I would definitely recommend and would stay here again when in Kirkwall.

Kirkwall Hotel

Harbour St, Kirkwall KW15 1LE, UK – 01856 872232

Good location with great views of the harbour. Had one of those old style elevators with the two doors. Parking on street on in free local lots. Says limited time parking in front of the hotel but staff said not enforced. I spent 3 days there with no issues. Room was comfortable and restaurant was good (evening service great one night, mediocre another).

Food was wonderful but service was very slow. Took 10 minutes before someone even took our order. It took so long to get our main course, the busperson thought we were done before we even got our food

Booking.com offers competitive rates for any type of hotel, from small independent hotels to a five star luxury ones. The site is available in 24 languages and offers over 71000 hotels in 71 countries. Could be useful for you. There are of course several such sites.

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

Kirkwall Pubs, Gastro Pubs and Bars

Bothy Bar

Mounthoolie Ln, Kirkwall KW15 1LA, UK – 01856 867000

Good beer/whisky, great live music, but bar staff were very rude, unfriendly and should frankly find another profession if they find serving customers so annoying. Their knowledge of what they were serving was also inadequate. I also didn't see any food options.

Cracking pub, very vintage looking with a nice drinks selection.

The Shore

Shore Street, Kirkwall KW15 1LG, UK – 01856 872200

Lovely restaurant. 2 evening sittings so aim for early- from 5.30 or late- from 7pm. Perfect service. Food was delicious, the crab tart and haddock risotto (?) were impressive. Not a cheap meal out but definitely worth the little extra simply for the overall quality.

We had a family meal there while staying near by in Scapa. I thought the choice of options was great and the food tasted even better, the portions were huge so go in with an empty belly. I would heartily recommend but it's pricey.

Nice and comfortable serviced flats but... Very slow or almost no Internet Inefficient underfloor heating

Bridge Street Apartment

5 Bridge St, Kirkwall KW15 1HR, UK – 07740 773000

Nice town house in the centre of Kirkwall. Two bedrooms, kitchen and living room. There was a bathroom with shower and toilet on the first floor and another toilet on the ground floor. Each bedroom also had a basin and wardrobe. Well equipped. Rooms were clean and decent size. Electric heaters in every room so we never felt cold. Our host David was very kind and friendly. When we arrived in the evening lights and heating were on, and everything was ready for us. Only minus is that the house is very close to local bars so on Friday and Saturday night the street was quite noisy...but it didn't influence our stay too much. We were really happy with this accommodation. I would definitely recommend to stay here.

Lovely little house, well maintained and plenty amenities around

Kirkwall Campsites and Caravan Parks

Orkney Caravan Park at The Pickaquoy Centre

Peerie Sea Loan, Kirkwall KW15 1UH, UK – 01856 879900

Really good camp site. Staff are friendly and on duty 8am till 8pm, certainly during the summer months. Very good facilities which are kept clean throughout the day. Close to Kirkwall town centre and ferry piers. Can be busy during summer, but without feeling over crowded. Campers with cars are kept separate from camper vans and campers without cars have their own designated space. The site is in a town setting with the attendant advantages/disadvantages. I think it deserves a 5* rating.

An excellent base for your travels around Orkney. The site is within walking distance of Kirkwall and is linked to a leisure centre & pool, with activities for adults and children alike. The facilities on site are great. The reception block has individual shower & toilet cubicles, a lounge for resting & maybe recharging, a kitchen with a kettle, microwave & fridge for campers travelling light & a laundry room. The staff are friendly & helpful. Brilliant!
