Kirkwall Hotel - Shopping around Kirkwall

I got Fraser to make a bespoke side table for my in laws Christmas. He was very helpful during the design process and managed to make the table exactly as me and my wife had envisaged it, complete with the Scar dragon design etched into the top of it perfectly. He did this all at Christmas time whilst busy and at reasonably short notice. I would highly recommend Fraser’s work to anyone looking for a nice piece of orkney furniture or something bespoke to your own design.

Fantastic brilliant

I was hoping there would be a good bookshop in Kirkwall and I was not disappointed. The shop is quite large and you can take your time to peruse the books, maps that they sell. I bought two books one to encourage me to get out walking next time I visit. The other was to do with Scapa Flow and the brave who lost their lives during the war.

Well stocked "proper" bookshop. They had the maps we sought, also. Excellent

This is my favourite secondhand bookshop in the world. The selection is amazing and the prices very reasonable indeed. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable, there are few books he doesn't know of and if he doesn't have what you want chances are he will be able to get it for you. It's next to the library. Check it out!!!

Great distillery tour with Viking heritage (great shout out to our tour guide Charlie - she was the absolute best). Highly recommended. If you drive ask for the driver's kit for 4£ in advance.

Good tour but it was the 'silent' season so no moving or working parts. A lot of people going through and lucky to get a spot due to a cancellation. Good to see a traditional distillery.

May be bias as they sold me a car I always wanted :) but so far it has be great customer service, they sorted a wee issue with the car and even drop it back to my work when they had finished.

Good place. Can be a bit tricky getting in and out due to close proximity of the roundabout. Be careful of big lorries reversing in.

Very friendly hardworking staff

With a very warm welcome, Ida and Balfour make you feel at home. Large comfortable beds and an extensive breakfast make for a great stay at this clean accomodation just up the road from the Scapa distillery.

Once the building is finished will be a great place to visit.

Bought some boots thinking they were a pair, one was 3 the other a 4 and for same foot. Never noticed until I got home. Went to shop two weeks later to see if anymore boots there and I thought were all odd until a lady(customer) told me they keep the other boot/shoe etc out the back to stop people stealing them. Assistant never told me this and never checked my boots. I know I should have but as there were only two boots and both green I expected them to be the same. There were no notices up to say other shoe/boot not on display. If I or anyone wanted to steal footwear surely new unused would be better?

A nice wee shop. It's bigger inside. Some cloths are expense but good quality. Do some nice gift items too

We arrived on a Sunday and the restaurant was quiet, our table had the previous customers cutlery and plates on it, we waited so long for them to clear it that we ended up doing it ourselves! Don’t expect service with a smile here which is a shame as the food and decor are excellent

I came from England to get an engagement ring I had seen on your page, they didn’t have it in the shop but the owner had one made for me in less than 3 hours he went out of his way to get it for me, I am very happy with my ring and would buy other pieces 5 star service and really friendly staff

Orkney Soap is a really nice product. Well worth a visit to the shop in Kirkwall. Brilliant to see folk from different walks of life doing what they can.

These guys are AMAZING we ordered our wedding rings from them and could not be happier, the staff are all really helpful and considering my ring had to be specially made (didn't do it in my size) the turn round time and after care were second to none

Beautiful jewellery hand crafted on site. I can't recommend highly enough. We had such a great experience touring the work shop then visiting the store in town. An amazing collection making it difficult to choose. Incredible owners/ staff who gave their time to answer all our questions and educate us on Orkney and Ortak silver. Looking forward to our next visit. Thank you Ortak.

Really good store for bike rental. The propriators are really nice, we had a flat and when they came to switch the bike they gave a ride back to the lazy guy in our group.

Kept hold of our bikes whilst we visited the town and then bought some lights from the shop. Great customer service and shop has reasonable prices. Thank you

A shop I love to visit which is unusual in itself! This is a quaint good old fashioned hardware store that has an equal sized deli attached. Good for angling club membership and all the ingredients for home made strawberry tarts and pretty much everything in between. Staff couldn't be more friendly to the passing visitor and local fishing advice is always available.

Excellent Lidl! Much better than the ones local to me in London - amazing fish and meat selection. Wasn't able to find sandwiches, but they had enough other snacks to furnish a picnic, and at a better price than the Tesco next door!

Usual Lidl prices, only one checkout open but fortunately it was quiet so I didn't have to queue long to pay.

I love OTE. I go there for anything and everything electrical. They're fully accessible on the ground floor but not on the first floor. They take cash, debit cards and credit cards. You get great products and great customer service too.

I needed to get the amplifier from my precious Hifi system fixed. It was not a massive breakage, nor is it really a super valuable system, it's more wear due to age and value because of my niche taste in 90s hifis! Either way, I figured it may be pricey beyond the value of the system or time consuming to fix. However, I dropped off in the morning and within a few hours I was getting a call back to tell me it had been fixed! Great service. I was worried I'd have to send it down south at extra expense but luckily OTE was at hand. Thanks again guys.

Good range of food at reasonable quality. Offers good but prices can be quite high. Staff responses range from lovely to disterested. Often queues.

Extremely well stocked with polite helpful staff disabled friendly. I have shopped for over 2years at the Local Tesco store then all of a sudden I decided to change over to the Co-op whom I had worked for some years ago, they have a far more selection of vegatarian food on offer compared to tesco and your fruit & vegetables are much fresher and last a lot longer including bakery items.

Good sized garden centre stocking a wide range of products. Homeward, kids toys etc. The cafe was pretty good too.

Visited The Willows Coffee Shop for a late lunch. Although quieter than normal by 2pm, some of the options had run out [quiches etc] but there was still a good core menu. Service was efficient and pleasant. The Garden Centre appears rather bare at this time of the year due to the changeover from Christmas merchandise to the presentation of new plants / trees & equipment. The core shop areas for pet food & equipment, seeds, tools & the florist shop still provide a good service regardless of the re-stocking elsewhere.

A huge selection of alcohol and food, incredibly knowledgeable staff, happy to help and very friendly.... I could have easily stayed here an hour or two discovering everything they sell.

Great supermarket and staff. Clean toilets and all you need. We had the £3 meal deal for lunch and great choices available. The wraps were very tasty.

Currently have a Snowdrop ring from Sheila Fleet. After 2 years and it still looks amazing! Also visited the shop with one of my friends. We were welcomed and had the chance to look at the workshop. It's been a wonderful experience and I look forward to going back (or order more from their website). Would highly recommend visiting the workshop, if you are visiting Orkney.

Staff very friendly and helpful. The displays were well thought out and well lit. All round an excellent place for visitors and locals alike.
