Find the best Kirkwall walks. The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional resource for all walkers, hikers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to leader led walks to any really arduous walks within the Kirkwall Hotel area.

The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Trek and Travel

15-17 Bridge St, Kirkwall KW15 1HR, UK – 01856 874505

Women in shop helped us to find an other shop to buy something would recommend as friendly staff

Great

William Shearer

71 Victoria St, Kirkwall KW15 1DQ, UK – 01856 873189

A shop I love to visit which is unusual in itself! This is a quaint good old fashioned hardware store that has an equal sized deli attached. Good for angling club membership and all the ingredients for home made strawberry tarts and pretty much everything in between. Staff couldn't be more friendly to the passing visitor and local fishing advice is always available.

Beautiful store. Someone has put their life into this business. You'd be a fool to walk past it without popping in first. Really friendly staff. Fantastic.

Sclaters Styland

20 Albert St, Kirkwall KW15 1HP, UK – 01856 872907

Relaxing shopping experience! Good customer service made me feel comfortable and not pressurised into purchasing. Good selection of shirts and suits.

Friendly and welcoming with a great selection of clothes

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good walking guide. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks. You get one walk free.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Camping and Caravaning

Orkney Caravan Park at The Pickaquoy Centre

Peerie Sea Loan, Kirkwall KW15 1UH, UK – 01856 879900

Really good camp site. Staff are friendly and on duty 8am till 8pm, certainly during the summer months. Very good facilities which are kept clean throughout the day. Close to Kirkwall town centre and ferry piers. Can be busy during summer, but without feeling over crowded. Campers with cars are kept separate from camper vans and campers without cars have their own designated space. The site is in a town setting with the attendant advantages/disadvantages. I think it deserves a 5* rating.

An excellent base for your travels around Orkney. The site is within walking distance of Kirkwall and is linked to a leisure centre & pool, with activities for adults and children alike. The facilities on site are great. The reception block has individual shower & toilet cubicles, a lounge for resting & maybe recharging, a kitchen with a kettle, microwave & fridge for campers travelling light & a laundry room. The staff are friendly & helpful. Brilliant!

Looking for dog friendly cottages around Kirkwall? The 'Dog Friendly Cottages' website looks like any other self-catering accommodation website but every single one should be dog friendly! This saves worrying and going through all the small print. However you you may need to check with the owner where the dog is expected to sleep and the what size of dog you can have!
Dog People find this is such a great website. If you have dogs who go on holiday with you just enter KW15 1LF and everything from dog friendly Bed and Breakfasts and Hotels to dog friendly walks and beaches come up. The Dog People site covers Bed & Breakfast, Holiday Parks, Hotels, Self Catering, Pubs & Food, Days Out. Enjoy!

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
